Profile
Dr Stuart Hawksworth works at the Health and Safety Executive in the United Kingdom, where he leads the Centre for Energy. His career has been built around risk: fire, explosion, process safety and the systems that keep major hazards under control. He has spent 25 years in the field and has held technical and oversight roles at the HSE laboratory in Buxton.
He is President of the International Association for Hydrogen Safety and a task leader in the European Hydrogen Safety Panel. His work includes a programme of hydrogen safety projects funded by the European Commission, the UK government and industry.
At the conference
His plenary looked at the safety of hydrogen in the energy system. It covered the association's activities, the projects now running, and the route from research output to regulations, codes and standards. The talk also examined priorities in transport, heat and power, the technical challenges that remain, and the education and training needed as hydrogen use expands.
The message was practical: safety is not a brake on innovation. It is the condition that allows innovation to be deployed at scale.
