Hydrogen leak and fire risk prompt Hyundai Nexo recall

A recall is a reminder that safety systems have to work in the field, not only in the laboratory.

WHEC 2022

The conference news feed reported a recall of Hyundai Nexo vehicles because of a hydrogen leak and fire risk. Recalls are a normal part of vehicle manufacturing, but a hydrogen recall attracts attention because the fuel and the storage system are less familiar to the public.

The item underlined the importance of robust leak detection, pressure management and service procedures. It also showed why safety research and standards work belong in the main conference programme, alongside production and cost.

For the industry, the lesson is not that hydrogen vehicles are unsafe. It is that safety has to be demonstrated consistently across design, manufacturing, maintenance and use.
