Profile

Hirohisa Uchida is a distinguished professor at Tokai University and president of KSP Inc. He is a fellow and vice president of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, an honorary member of the German Society of Materials Science and honorary president of the Asian Science Park Association.

He studied at Tokai University and earned his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart. He worked at the Max Planck Institute for Metals before returning to Tokai University, where he served as professor, vice chancellor and dean of the School of Engineering. His research has focused on hydrogen storage alloys and the practical systems that use them.

At the conference

His keynote examined hydrogen storage by metal alloys. It began with the basic reaction between hydrogen gas and metal, then moved to the surface and bulk processes that control absorption and release. It described a nanostructured FeTi alloy developed in a Japanese environment ministry project and the work to reduce its production cost.

The applications discussed included renewable energy storage, output fluctuation control and the use of heat from absorption and desorption in agriculture and fish breeding. The talk showed how a materials question can become a systems solution.

See the keynote speakers page for the other keynote talks, or the topics page for the storage subject area.
